Using Arc in 5.1.18

I just installed ESS-5.1.18.  When I try to run M-x Arc I get an
error.  The last part of the *Messages* buffer is

 Type C-h m for help on ESS version 5.1.18
 Cannot read history file /tmp/.ARChistory
 Wrong type argument: stringp, nil

(I happened to be working on ess.stat.wisc.edu if anyone wants to try
to debug.)
