you're welcome

MiHe> But, I still have problems on the info files.

You now get the *.info files with the ESS distribution.
They should *not* be remade by make anyway...
hmm, funny..

    MiHe> gmake EMACS=xemacs

    MiHe> runs fine until

    MiHe> gmake[1]: Entering directory `/.../nwu.edu/fs/home/m/mch927/lib/emacs/ess-5.1.13/doc'

MiHe> There appears to be some sort of a permission problem here.

    MiHe> Note that:

    MiHe> brahms(mch927) 48% ls -l doc/ess.info
    MiHe> -r-------- 1 mch927 users 2957 Mar 6 04:38 doc/ess.info

yes, and it is in the tar file:

lynne{maechler}549> tar tfvz .../CRAN/src/other/ess/ESS-5.1.13.tar.gz |grep info
-r--r--r-- 2110/10 2957 2000-03-06 11:38:50 ess-5.1.13/doc/ess.info
-r--r--r-- 2110/10 50026 2000-03-06 12:19:50 ess-5.1.13/doc/ess.info-1
-r--r--r-- 2110/10 50829 2000-03-06 12:19:50 ess-5.1.13/doc/ess.info-2
-r--r--r-- 2110/10 16667 2000-03-06 12:19:51 ess-5.1.13/doc/ess.info-3

A bug in the "dist" target of the toplevel Makefile.
I've corrected it for the next release.

Thank you for reporting!

@uref ~= URL , a newer texinfo definition.

Get a new version of GNU's texinfo package,
particularly replace your current
	     texinfo.tex
	     ( = /.../nwu.edu/fs/opt/teTeX/texmf/tex/texinfo/texinfo.tex )
by a newer one,
found on any GNU mirror site.
