unbalanced quotes vanish

I have never seen this or heard about it.  
I'm not at all sure that this is deliberate.

Has anyone seen this before?
Is it lisp(stat) specific or couldn't it happen in other ESS modes as well ?
(I've tried a bit to see something like it in *R* and have not succeeded ...)

Could it be that you use some special  lisp Emacs modes in addition to ESS?
