Ah!! Now it works. I think I might have been loading an old version
of ESS and this caused a clash with 5.1.11. (dumb mistake) So, I just
byte-compiled ess-site and it appears to run. But, I just ran into
another problem.
I did M-x S+5 and then C-c C-v lm to make sure help works. The result
was a buffer that says:
cat: illegal option -- c
Usage: cat [-benrstuv] [-|File ...]
Here is a dump of the *ESS* buffer:
(S+5): ess-dialect=Initial-dialect, buf=*scratch*
(inferior-ess 0): ess-start-args=nil
ess-setq-vars-default 0: ess-language=Initial, -dialect=Initial-dialect, buf=*ESS*, comint..echoes=nil, comint..sender=comint-simple-send
