question on building ess 5.1.11

Can you send us the transcript of the *shell* where the 5.1.12 missing
separator message is displayed?  Thanks.

Can you load the 5.1.11 ess-site.el (not the .elc version) successfully?

Can you try again with "xemacs -q --no-site-file", just to verify that
there is not an interaction with your .emacs or site-start.el
