Fontifying *R*...(regexps.............)

Dear All,

I am using ESS-5.5.13 on Xemacs (21.1) with R. Sometimes I accidentally run a
function that produces several thousand lines of output (say, printing a
large data frame). Hitting C-c C-c to try to stop it is generally much worse
than just letting it run to completion: xemacs can be hung, displaying the
message 

Fontifying *R*...(regexps.............)

for a LONG time (> 5'), specially if I have been working without quitting
xemacs for many hours. Is there a way to prevent this (besides not hitting C-c
C-c?).
