set-buffer-process-coding-system

Dear ess,
	if i want to use German latin-1 characters in R 

plot(0,0,main="asdädsa")

i only get valig results if i set set-buffer-process-coding-system to
latin-1. Is there a possibility to make this the default for R? I tried to
set process-coding-system.alist without success..

Version: ess-5.1.9 on W95B R 1.01
