install ESS on win-32

Colleagues

We have had trouble installing the EES module to work with xmacs 21.1 
and R on a PC running NT. The xemacs program is working fine by itself. 
In particular, we were unable to compile the Makefile according to the 
instructions available at <http://ess.stat.wisc.edu/ESS-5.0-README>.  

Can anyone point us to more appropriate instructions or offer us some
advice on getting ESS working?
