Hmm... That is one approach.  The other is to provide an easy
customization mechanism for creating new "types" of running processes
(i.e. with particular starting arguments).  It isn't too hard if you
know emacs lisp (copy "(defun R ...)" and replace the prompt with a
set value), but it's an ugly hack.  

We probably could include examples of such in the next version of ESS
(i.e. you'd copy and edit a WELL DOCUMENTED and EXPLAINED version in
ess-site.el).   Would this help?  

Then you'd do:
        M-x my-R-1   (or "emacs -f my-R-1"), or rich's version...

Where my-R-1 is the version with a particular set of starting
arguments.
