Evaluating without showing, a couple of other things

Dear all,

I'm using R and ESS on Digital UNIX with emacs 19.34.

I haven't quite understood the difference between eval and eval-and-go,
but there is something about evaluation I'm curious about. 
Is it possible to have ESS evaluate a piece of code without showing the
actual code in the iESS buffer, just error messages?
If you have a long piece of code, it may often be difficult to see if
there has been an error message somewhere, and if there are no error
messages, seeing the code in the iESS buffer is often not necessary.

Another, simpler thing: I have been trying to find which variable that
controls the indentation of opening braces, I would like to have like
if(something)
{
^--- no indentation here... I have tried to set all the variables I could
imagine had something to do with it to 0, but nothing happened... Which
should I set...?

Finally, I have a question that I guess is more related to comint than
iESS, but once I'm at it....: I would like the up and down keys to mean
comint-previous-input and comint-next-input respectively while at
command-line, but previous-line and next-line when I'm not. Can I achieve
that without too much effort (I allready have it working while at command
line)?
